Just about every single enclosure at this zoo is extremely basic, with either steep walls, chain link fencing, or simply empty. I feel sorry for the raccoons in their mini-pit.

Well these Raccoons have access to a very large, real tree, and the exhibit isn't that small. It's really not that bad.

Perhaps I am being too negative in regards to the Dartmoor Zoo (the past history of the park has been extremely shaky) but is there a single enclosure that was constructed for more than 10 cents?:) It looks some of the roadside zoos that I've seen in Canada and the U.S.

You are being a bit negative, but I do think that the new owners could have maybe done some more reguarding enclosure furniture and that. To be honest I think a person with more money and experience should have bought the place, aas it needs one hell of a lot of money spent on it which the current owners just don't have. And I don't know why they got 2 extra racoons, as this enclosure was fine for the pair but seems a bit crowded with 4 adults.

Put simply, there wasn't anyone else who wanted to buy it and run the zoo.

And, snowleopard, reading Mee's book and looking at, very few, pictures in this gallery does not justify some of your comments. Wasn't it you who said you can never judge a zoo unless you've seen it in person ;) . Well, I have visited and believe that many of the exhibits which you have labelled "basic" are actually better for the animals than many of those at the major zoos. Also, the amount of building work and keeper attitudes promises that the zoo will hopefully have a brighter future ahead.

I think as long as they spruced up this enclosure (really a case of making it look better) they could bring in a pair of red pandas and so add an exciting new and endangered species to the zoo which I guess many zoo visitors would enjoy. It is just a case of tweaking this enclosure.
