I think they have made major steps forward in improvements and upgrading what was once a really rundown collection. I also think its a pretty monumental task.
I went here once long ago and its quite off the beaten track up on the southern slope of Dartmoor almost. There isn't really anything they can do about the location and road access but on the plus side they have the huge city of Plymouth on their doorstep to draw local visitors/schools etc from. However I can't see that many visitors from further afield being able to find it unless they are very well advertised.
I wouldn't count on the local chav's of Plymouth to visit. The wife and I have been 6 times in the past 4 months. Apart from the last visit during half term the place has been almost dead.
Although the number that visit during the holidays will help keep it going until the film money starts to filter through.
As you say it will be a huge task to bring it up. Although I think Ben and family along with all the staff are determined to do so.

It's still the same, though it has been tidied up a little. This is from the back of the entrance though, no the front. It does look quite a bit better from the front.
This is what you see as you walk out to leave. The Sika Deer are on the left and the access road is to the right on the other side of the hedge. Given the current size and popularity of the zoo at present the entrance is more than enough. If visitor numbers grow especially next year after the release of the film i'm sure they will improve both the car park and the zoo entrance.
Yes things need to be improved. I'm sure Ben and Duncan are well aware of the short-comings they currently have to address.
You've got to remember though, this place gets very few visitors when compared to other zoo's.
