cindel, i do agree with wat your saying is, but with dudley's landscape they cant just start a brand new enclosure like cincy, chester, london, busch gardens. their land isn't that suitable to a zoo and that is a hinderance
But if we demolish every last trace of 1960s zoo architecture now we'll have nothing left in 2109 when the 1960s will be every bit as remote as the 1860s are to us today. We cannot afford to be that short-sighted - when it's gone it's gone!
Ben is not the father of Jaz..that was Dudley's original male 'Joe' (Joe x AZimat= Jaz) Ben is a non--breeder though Azimat could probably breed again if paired with the younger male 'Jorong.'
Its not so much they don't have sifficient space- more the style and quality of this exhibit is completely oudated.
but does history count for nothing? I'm sure the structure and site could be put to good use without the need to obliterate one of the zoo's most distinctive buildings.
I can't see the need for Dudley to conserve another useless building, especially one they don't have to. Most zoos routinely demolish old buildings that don't have listed status, so why not Dudley? The Bronx Zoo's Great Apes building which was the original template for this one was demolished when the new 'Congo Gorilla Forest' was built covering the same site. I can't see why Dudley should keep it as its nothing to be proud of nowadays..if keeping all their old buildings of whatever age was taken to its logical conclusion, the zoo would look like a mausoleum, with no room for modern exhibits. It would give them an even more 'archaic' reputation than they have now- Dudley need to look forwards, not live in the past.
