OLD ZOO MONKEY ENCLOSURE BEFORE 1950

unsure as to where this is now within the zoo anyone got any ideas
I know for certain that this is now the Barbary Sheep enclosure.
The steps that go round the back of it are still there.

this actually looks really good, as if they may have had access to at least a couple of trees (not that baboons really need trees in the way other primates do).

Does Adrian1963-or anyone else-know when this enclosure was there until? I first visited Dudley about 1960 but I don't remember it, though the Barbary Sheep enclosure was quite a bit later I think. In between(time-wise) there may have been something else- another ungulate enclosure?

I have a map from 1966 which shows that the Barbary Sheep were in this enclosure.
Pertinax if you can remember the Gazzels in the enclosure nex to them then I would say it was 1964 when the Barbary sheep were moved into here as the Gazzels were moved to the enclosure next door in 1964

The monkey enclosure is still shown in a guide from ca.1964 (the back cover includes an advertisement for "the new Birmingham Zoo" which opened in 1964). At the time, the Barbary Sheep were housed in an enclosure just to the left of the entrance.

The new Barbary Sheep enclosure must have been built around 1965 and at this point the macaques were moved to a former vulture aviary (where the spider monkeys are today).

The exhibit originally housed a mixed group of Rhesus Macaques, Guinea Baboons and Hamadryas Baboons, but the baboons seem to have disappeared around the time of WWII.

Thanks Robmv we can conifendtly say it was 1965 then as they as this appears to be the first time that the Barbary Sheep were moved to thier exsisting enclosure
