ORANGUTAN OUTDOOR AREA

Thier is a third area to the left, with the moat frozen over it gives you an idea how big this could be for the Orangutans if they were to invest in updating the outside as well as the inside

The enclosure actually looks great in the snow lol

From above you can actually appreciate the benefits of the high walls, imagine how exposed and cold they would be without them as they are so near to the top.

Now that the enclosure is pure white it truly does resemble a giant urinal!:p I'm just teasing, as sadly there are still worse orangutan exhibits out there in the zoo world.

Unless I'm mistaken the climbing equipment is all solid timbers- there appear to be no ropes, nets, hoses etc as is normal nowadays.

I really hope they can somehow improve these outside areas, though it seems the main structure will probably remain as it is.

Thought I would re open the debate on this house/building.

Was reading Animal magazine Jan 1963 information gained shows a picture of the Ape House and it looks like the walls that divide each area have been altered as when opened the 2 middle walls extended to the water mote at the front.
Also inside the House at the rear was a corridor to which people could walk through and watch the soecies through Armoured plated glass.
At one end of the corridor was a fully fitted kitchen where they prepared all the food for the animals and at the other end was a fully functional welfare room the whole building had underfloor heating so that each of the indoor enclosures could be kept at the correct temp. for the species in the house.
ALL this for the massive price of £30,000 the building was opened in 1962 thus making it a non tecton building including the moted area at the front.
