Bear Canyon. The bears could be viewed from the road above (in the background) or across a moat from the road leading to the Lower Entrance.
The enclosure was all concrete and rock, but in 1981-82 it was renovated and although the large rock remained, much of it was planted out with grass, trees and shrubs, including three large pines sourced from the Jenolan State forest, and a waterfall and stream added. The sunbears had gone and were replaced by the zoo's three American Black Bears - Charlie, Jethro and Jed.
