Cage on Lubetkin Terrace 31st October 1997

Was this designed by the same person who designed the penguin pool at London Zoo?

What is this exhibit? It looks like a freeway onramp that comes to a dead end with an aviary as one of the support structures.

It was indeed- the Architect Lubetkin, he also designed the original circular Gorilla House at London Zoo. Look him up for more details.

At Dudley there are about seven listed 'Lubetkin' buildings from the 1930's era. This one is/was a viewing terrace overlooking a large valley paddock which formerly held Wolves and Bears(though not together!) The animals' dens were underneath this structure and I believe it is closed to access now as it is unsafe. The little 'aviary' around the support pole would be a much more recent addition.

.... And the little aviary is no longer there, and not only dont I remember what was in it, I dont remember it full stop.

I seem to remember an Owl - maybe a Tawny. Was there not a Squirrel cage on the terrace at some point?

I remember the aviary, don't recall it ever housing anything though?
I assume that this may have been the chimp enclosure when the zoo first opened, Adrian1963 posted a map a while back and this is in the exact spot marked for chimps on it!
