This enclosure is one of the very most debated here at ZooChat. As I have confessed in other threads I am completely in love with these modernistic pieces of architecture at Dudley (and in London Zoo), but only from a strictly architecture/history point of view. Naturally they are totally unsuitable as zoo enclosures from today´s perspective.

One question, though! The wire fence and the blue poles is a later addition, right? Can anybody confirm or deny this?

I think it is a later addition, you don't see them in any of the original photos.
I think this could be used by the tigers and bears (not at the same time obviously lol).

You have seen original photos and the wire fence is not there? That´s what I thought. Thanks, ashely-h!

Wow, thanks! That is one horrible, disgusting and yet extremely interesting picture. Thanks again!

Again, this photo is interesting for revealing the back walls of the two adjacent pits as later additions which may therefore not be listed.

I am in favour of any imitation concrete work or additional non-listed structures to be removed in order to fully showcase the lubetkin architecture. For this reason (second to, of course, the welfare of the apes), I would advocate removal of the back walls of the Orang Utan exhibit, as they serve to imitate the Tecton structures while at the same time creating a very depressing exhibit.

Said exhibit in 1970, with Helga, female and her ill-fated cub, Chico.

was chico the only cub produced by that pair? Or did Dudley ever successfully breed this species?
