And rather badly planted as well. For one thing the plant is an epiphyte and would be found high up in a tree canopy not in the ground. And Then, this specimen appears to have been planted too deep so that it most likely will rot.
 
there is a deplorable trend in "garden design" at the moment (seen all the time on those reality house-garden competition shows) where bromeliads are used as if they were bedding plants. Perhaps not such an issue in the UK of course where they can't be grown outside, but cetainly in northern NZ, Australia, etc.
 
3 months later it's still there and appears to have grown. The bright pink bracts have now turned green.
