The zoo could make it mysteriously explode overnight?
That seriously seem like the only use it's going to be, unless they maybe cage it over and put the Orangs in it, then they'd have the Asian black bears, Tigers and Orangs all in the same area. Would look pretty good I guess, the only problem would probably be the indoor housing.

Explode overnight? If they told the truth I think every member of staff have probably thought of that more than once. The indoor housing is through those little grey squares on the back wall. They obviously go into the hillside. Great for bears as they are probably like a cavebut any other animals a nightmare

The bears evidently didn't think so. It used to be very hard to lure them indoors as they did not like being locked in. Often they would refuse to go inside even for a food lure. Consequently the outdoor enclosure was often very dirty with their dung because it could not be cleaned regularly. Despite the small enclosure, I believe Polar Bears at Dudley raised cubs successfully more than once.
If this pit isn't graded (I know that some of the buildings zoo are), couldn't they knock some of the indoor rooms into bigger ones, or restructure the whole thing?
How near are the other pits? Maybe if they're close, they could be joined together somehow (the orangs could probably climb between them on ropes and poles).

Sadly they are listed buildings so can't be pulled down or blown up!
I guess if they keep them there long enough they will become so badly maintained that they could have a reason to pull them down for safety reasons.
It would be possible to knock all the 3 pits into one I'm sure as they are all together , but whether they could legally do this is another thing.
I was going to mention in my first post that the wall on the right looks flimsy (to me anyway ), thus removable, which would give the orangs somewhere to walk through if they could/would join the points up. Shame that they're listed buildings-I've seen far nicer places that atn't and should be!
