In contrast to the Gorilla Zaire's move from Jersey to London, Gambar represented a good/worthwhile transfer from ZSL to Jersey- not only could he be paired with another Sumatran(Gina) but they went on to be productive breeding-wise too.
I can remember Gambar almost when he first arrived at ZSL. He was aquired circa 1963 as a companion for the young Bornean orang 'Bulu' that was born there in 1961. He had very short frizzy hair and the concrete cages at London made that worse. He used to walk upright even as a youngster.
When ZSL later received the large group of young Orangutans from Borneo, that left Gambar as the only Sumatran and the 'odd one out'. Fortunately they recognised his different species(then subspecies) and his subsequent move to Jersey to pair up with Sumatran 'Gina' was one that worked out well. Gina had arrived with a Bornean male Giles and they were able to re-pair them. You probably know this!
