Jambo 1982

Scanned from a Kodachrome slide. It didn't seem right that the only portrit of Jambo in this Gallery was a postcard. He was the third gorilla born in a zoo (Basle 1961), the first male and the first to be mother-reared. He was a very successful breeding male at Jersey, and his offspring were sent to zoos around the world. His great-grandchildren are now starting to breed. Gorilla paddock, Jersey, 26th August 1982.

Interesting too that Jersey bred far more Gorillas under Jambo's regime than they ever have since. His successor Ya Kwanza was a bit of a duff while the current small group of just five Gorillas contains only one offspring though I'm not exactly sure why.
