I can understand them needing to be inside due to weather rtestrictions, but behind glass aswell? I would have assumed the building would be warm enough inside not to need to worry with glass too.

Maybe high glass is to minimise disturbance?

All European Koala enclosures are basically similar- the indoor areas are always glass-fronted (I've seen Edinburgh's, Duisburg's, Planckendael's and Vienna's). It's my understanding that this is encouraged (if not enforced) by the studbook holders.

It is indeed. The studbook is held by San Diego Zoo and they determine how koalas should be kept. It also means the koalas themselves are less stressed by visitors. Edinburgh very much puts animal welfare to the fore nowadays and the aim is always to keep the animal as wild as possible!

sheesh - and in australia we let japanese tourists play with them!

this looks like the northern koala subspecies to me - probably not the best choice for us to have sent overseas. the ones we have down here in the south of australia are larger, with much thicker coats. they can handle anything down to a few degrees below freezing overnight.

They are indeed Queensland Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus adustus).
