I assume this is Barney? I understand he always used to occupy the 'best' spot in the exhibit; that is if we can talk about a best spot, it's all rock. How deep was the pool?

I've read in an old guide that the pool was 6 feet deep in parts. (or was that over 6 feet deep......I'll have to check!)
Interesting photo. I've spent time stood by this enclosure in the past few years trying to visualise what it was like when it contained Polar Bears.

SO the Steller's sea eagle aviary held a pair (Im assuming Barney and Mercedes?) of polar bears ? did they have any access to an indoor shelter ?

This picture is THE Steller's sea eagle aviary, pre eagles of course and Barney and Mercedes, lived together here until the 2 cubs were born, when Mercedes would be moved to the former brown bear enclosure to rear her cubs.

I understood that this has now been made the sea eagle aviary and I believe it used to hold waldrapp ibis.
Just amazed that it was built to house a pair of polar bears and they succesfully bred!
It seems so small to have housed polar bears. But I suppose it makes sense as that part of the zoo has a lot of water with the sea lions and the water fowl aviary so shared filtration or something ?
