Thanks for the info pertinax I know there was speculation of adding giraffe the the current african savannah enclosure, which currently contains zebra, kudu + nyala, but after anyalasis it was found that the enclosure was too steep. Where did the orang-utans go too after they left due to the enclosure needed for the tempry housing of the chimps.
The last African female was sent to Whipsnade
Orang utans were the first inhabitants of the great ape house and left the collection before the gorillas arrived, to where i'm not sure.
The last two Orangutans were Borneans- female 'Maria' and male 'Jantan' - 'Jantan' came from(I think) London Zoo to replace the previous male 'Kabir' (deceased) so was younger than 'Maria'. I think one of that pair may have also died at Edinburgh, maybe both- not sure on that. The Ape house was even more unsuitable (IMO) for Orangutans than it was for Gorillas.
