Mowgli was born in October 2004 at Beauval Zoo, he arrived from there in December 2005. Edinburgh's previous male Pele II died in September 2005, hence the reason he arrived. The females previously at Edinburgh are Handaya, I don't know what happened to her although I do have a feeling she may have died there. The other female who was at Edinburgh until recently (She died in 2011 apparently) was Tina who came from a circus she arrived in 2007. She was estimated to between six and eight years old. Tina was a spotted Jaguar unlike Mowgli, she supposedly had no canine teeth and when she was introduced to Mowgli she could not defend herself. Mowgli did not kill her, Edinburgh has not given a public statement as to Tina's death. A new female should be arriving next year hopefully, this could mean the birth of the UK's first Jaguar cubs for a number of years, anybody know which collection was the last to successfully breed Jaguars. Sophia and Salvador (died in 2011) at Chester had cubs in 2005 unfortunately they were stillborns. Mowgli is the only Jaguar currently at Edinburgh.
Tina died because of cancer... as for not her not having teeth she always had teeth when i saw her...and i distinctly remember her taking a bite out of his tail and seeing the aftermath of that.
Handaya died at the zoo from old age.. when they got mowgli they didnt really think she would be able to breed because of her age... she died at the zoo
Where did you get your facts from Jordon?
Thanks for the comments about the picture... been waiting a age for the right moment to photograph Mowgli to get just the right light to get him and the background kinda melting into each other... he is a hard cat to photograph... tho easier in his old enclosure
I've corrected it Tina had no canine teeth. There's a few young female Jaguars available in Germany and if Chester want to send Sophia to Edinburgh (I doubt it!)
I hope I get a decent photo not really got a good photo of a Jaguar.
The website makes no mention of Handaya or Tina not having canine teeth... nor does it even mention that she passed away... they still have her up there as being alive... they are needing to update that part of the site. Just wondered where the info came from cause i would love to look back at all the cats that Edinburgh Zoo have had in the past. Pele, Handaya and Tina were all the cat i knew and loved well... was wondering about before them.

The one this i REALLY remember about him is that he had a nasty habit of charging at the door at the front of his enclosure... snarling and being extremely angry...i was a kid at the time and i still remember the thumps he use to give it...i have alot of respect for those doors...lol. Once i was trying to get a picture of him and he pounced right at me... got to be up there in my top ten scariest moments..and one of my best animal experiences as a kid.
