Taronga Zoo 2007 - Male hybrid Orangutan looks over his territory

He looks like a Bornean to me (darker coat, forward pads). I think there may be a Sumatran male(Kluet) there now but not sure on that.

I think ISIS lists Taronga to have Sumatrans but I'd trust you better than myself to see between the species; although I do know that the Bornean type is usually darker.

This is a hybird orang and he shares the exhibit with a hybrid female (both are desexed).

Kluet resides at Adelaide Zoo.

:)

I did add ' or a Hybrid' to my comment above but it didn't edit it in. Anyway, thanks for letting us know. Could you list the current Taronga Orangutans(name, sex, species?)

This is Jantan, a cocktail orang, born in 1987.

Pertinax, I suggest you PM Pongogirl - she can give you more info than anyone else about Taronga's orangs.

Taronga only has two Orangs at the moment, 21 year old Jantan the big male and a female 23 year old Willow. Both are hybrids

I've read on another thread the intention for Taronga to eventually have Sumatrans like the other major Australian Zoos. Do you think these two will stay longterm too, or be moved to somewhere else?

I would think long term. The SC is having a lot of difficulty sourcing female Sumatran orangs from other regions.

But there is always the possibility they could acquire male/s (eg. Malu will need to be transferred from Melbourne Zoo in the near future).

:)

Even if they can't source new animals from outside Australia, they could make up a pair by getting a female from Perth perhaps and e.g. the male you mention from Melbourne- as I believe those two groups aren't related at all?

Did Kluet come to Taronga for a while before moving over to Adelaide? (he was bred at Jersey Zoo UK)
