Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) at Edinburgh Zoo - 9th January 2012

Both of the individuals held at Edinburgh were quite active in the late afternoon. It is always good to see this species, which is increasingly scarce in UK collections.

UK zoos have lost interest, I fear. The same could be said about Bush Dogs.

It would surely not be impossible to import fresh blood from the US or South America for either species.

Yes, when this happens it seems an almost irreversible trend. These were more an ''80's species' I think. One reason may be they are often invisible to visitors(apart from the smell!) so maybe not regarded as a good exhibit. Bush dogs in large groups are a better exhibit though.

Can't say I've ever really noticed a particular smell about them :P

There's definitely a smell, but that's just them and I love it! After all, the idea behind a zoo visit is to experience the sight, sound and smell isn't it?

Its just about the strongest smell you'll encounter in any zoo that has Maned Wolves. Maybe you just haven't noticed where it comes from. Its very pungent-but not unpleasant though.
