I guess he's relaxed all the time now, at his age When I was there in September 20007, a group of peacocks entered the exhibit and wandered very close to him while he was asleep, almost walking on top of him him. Keepers watching this told me that 10 years ago he would have slaughtered them all quickly and easily. I have even uploaded a photo of this in the Taronga gallery.

Why are bears so underpresented in Australia? Quarantine regulations?
I was in Australia from May 2007 to January 2008 and visited 24 zoos and wildlife parks in QLD, NSW, VIC and SA. It seemed to me that, apart from Sea World's Polars and Taronga's Kodiak, all there was were around a dozen Syrian Brown Bears and maybe the same number of Malayan Sun Bears. Does any zoo have Asiatic Blacks? God knows there are hundreds in Asian bear farms, and Australian zoos have rescued Malayan Sun Bears from those horrible places before (including Taronga's, if I'm not mistaken) so why not Asiatic Black too.
Do you think there's any chance that Australia will see more Polar Bears in the near future? Right now there is only Sea World.
