Kangaroo enclosure - 1982

This enclosure was a large exhibit at the top of the zoo (you can see the main entrance building in the background), extending from the entrance down to the platypus house. It simulated a dry riverbed. Built by Sydney Council (some kind of government gift or something) it took absolutely forever to complete because the workers would only come in to work every few weeks for a few days, then go off to work on some other project, then come back for a few more days later on etc.

Grass was included around the river 'banks', but because emus were put in the enclosure the grass all disappeared after a few weeks.

Hix, I noticed you used a past tense. This exhibit was still there when I visited in 2007 but just renamed 'Wild Australia' or something. ;)

No, this exhibit has gone. The back part of it (on the left) has been incorporated into Wild Australia, tghe part on the right was part of koala encounters and the echidna/quokka yard. The rocks you can see were moved around, fencing put up and extended all the way to the waterfowl ponds. The exhibit in the photo above was not walk-through either.
