If the fences were still up, I can see it housing smaller cat species and/or animals that look like cats (civets, fossa, grison)

Having seen them in person I can say I am not sorry to see them go (though they may have been good for smaller carnivores as noted above). Does anyone know what, if anything, will be developed here?

I'm on the 'crying shame' side of this argument. The old enclosures could have been refurbished to suit all sorts of interesting creatures: most zoos would cherish a south-facing terrace with natural rock outcrops and make it into a special feature. I fear that this is a consequence of all those dollars sent to China.

One of the most distinctive parts of Edinburgh Zoo as I remember it. A great shame to lose these enclosures entirely- as others have said, why not convert for other species?

I'm in agreement, this is a complete waste of an area and enclosures that could have been adapted in a number of ways to hold fewer or smaller species. It was one of the things I found most irritating on my return visit last week after a gap of 6 years. The once excellent carnivore collection has been reduced to a fairly average one.
