Now with displays about Scottish wildlife - including some with peep-holes to look through on cut out animals in the old enclosures. The only cats still along this path are the Scottish Wildcats and Sumatran Tigers.

Are there plans for this area? Any new potential developments on the horizon?

Last anyone heard, plan is for it to be left for vegetation to take hold, turning it into a garden area.

Why were these exhibits abandoned? Are they not big enough even for small cats or some other kind of small mammals?

As discussed at length in the past, they would have been eminently suitable for the purpose you propose - and in fact, in latter years held more small carnivore taxa than they did big cats and the like. However, the current management at Edinburgh isn't terribly interested in small carnivores..... or anything that isn't a Giant Panda, truth be told. As such the collection has been severely reduced in recent years, with many enclosures lying empty or being converted into garden areas.

I'll message you with more information via FB in the morning :) in the meantime this image should provide some idea of the scale of these exhibits:

Former Cat Row.....

Isn't thus the area that once held a state of the art (for that era) tiger enclosure, that was the pride of the zoo?

First dinosaur models now cut out animals! Is Edinburgh still a zoo?! It really worries me that HWP is part of the same organisation! :(
