Current thinking is that they were possibly domesticated from a different species or subspecies than the "domestic dog" was, and at a different time, and as such merit taxonomic distinction - however, interbreeding with domestic dogs has since occurred in many populations, so the Singing Dog and Dingo are possibly best understood as a distinct taxon, albeit an impure one.
