I see what you mean! It's not something I ever noticed whilst he was up at Edinburgh - he usually spent much of his time laid in full view poking out of an overturned barrel, and as such was seldom seen face-on - as can be seen in the following photograph by Nisha:
The one time I got a prolonged view of him out of the barrel, I did not notice these features of his face when getting the following image, but on reflection his cheeks *are* quite round:
No special access -- the interior sections of the golden cat enclosures are adjacent to one another, and the male can be viewed (occasionally) through a windowed door just uphill of the main (female) enclosure. The view is through glass and two lots of mesh (see attached view of Khan when he was giving me a closer inspection), so getting a clear shot of him wasn't particularly easy.
