From a slide taken by my father, developed May 1966. This was the year of Winnie the Pilot Whale's short Flamingo Park career - I saw her once, but no photo I'm afraid.

That brings back memories. On the occasion I saw Winnie she was careering round and round her pool and the water was very murky. On our next visit (we used to go every month or so) she was gone and I can still see myself sitting in the back of our car as we set off home and my father saying "no baby whale". I also remember a dolphin being given an inflatable toy after it had lost its calf.
I forgot to say that this year when I was in the zoo office I was shown a file marked "Whaling in the Faroe Islands" or similar. It was full of documents about the number of Pilot Whales killed around 1965 and 1966 (can't really see why the zoo needed those figures) and also had correspondence concerning the acquisition of Winnie.
