Chimpanzee indoor exhibit at Flamingoland 19/02/12

How is that relevant?

Alan

I mean that as a person who is not interested in the species my opinion is an irrelevance. I don't give Chimpanzees much of a look anywhere so I have little with which to compare it. Having said that, like Pertinax I think it appears well-furnished but dark. I believe the Chimpanzees could be leaving before too long anyway.

It looks to me like a respiratory problem waiting to happen

If we are talking about the darkness, is this not a factor of where the photographer is, and not the conditions for the animals?

You can see that the only light is coming through the shift doors on the right. And if the sun were not there, it would be even darker.
Of course, what is happening on the left we can't see

Still, it is in contrast with the outdoor yard.... where there appears to be no shade at all.

Yes, I suspected as much :D

So they get to spend more time in this barn cellar of a holding area I suppose

Not necessarily; northern England's climate is more often damp and gloomy rather than actually disruptive.

Regarding sunshine:

Average annual sunshine durations over NE England range from almost 1500 hours on the coast to less than 1250 hours in the higher Pennines.

(Met Office: Regional Climate: North East England)

Compare with US figures, where even proverbially-rainy Seattle manages 2000 on average.

Shade is not typically the biggest consideration in a British zoo exhibit!

I think they should issue these Chimpanzees with Miners' Flashlight Helmets...seriously this indoors does look in need of an upgrade if they are staying there longterm. Maybe that's why they are going- the easier option.

It's the light that appears to be coming through the rafters that concerns me. Good job this is housing Chimps, not orangs, or I can't help wondering if Flamingoland would end up with free-ranging apes..

A Chimpanzee escaped from this house soon after the species moved in. It made its way right down to the water ride/Lion House (maybe this was before the Lions arrived). Attempts were made to traquilise it, but it ended up being shot. Someone told me that at one point it had hold of Matt Brash's head and swung him around. The same week Matt Brash amputated part of Sewerby's male Pale-fronted Capuchin's tail, an operation that did not go to plan - all in all a traumatic few days with primates.

Yes, the old male I forgot his name (Nelson?), escaped a few years ago. Matt Brash mentioned in his book some of the residents of the Zoo did hate him [They would seeing as he was the vet:p] he also mentioned that some of them would love to rip him apart, and would do given have a chance.

Flamingo Land's current group are made up of females, some of which I think are elderly. I don't have an idea how many they have because I didn't see any due to a keeper cleaning out there enclosure.
