Olive the hybrid Macaw 30th March 2012

As far as I remember when she was first in the show Buffon's was mentioned, although it would seem unusual to use a Buffon's for hybridisation. I'd have thought a Military would be a more likely candidate, but I'm sure it was a Buffon's that was mentioned although it was quite a few years ago (it was during a show held in the Sealion Centre that I saw her for the first time - mmm, sounds like the start of a novel or short story - in one of the winter seasons).

It looks like it's been painted by a child after too much coca-cola! :D

(Or any other E number based fizzy drink....... ;))

I guess Buffon's/Military would be the only species that would give the green colour on the Mantle. Presumably it could have been either- whichever they had at the time and as they are so similar, apart from size, they are sometimes misidentified.

I presume 'Reuben' had the same parents?

As far as I know Reuben is a "pure" (not the best description really) Harlequin Macaw, presumably with a Green-winged as his father. His plumage is the same as several Harlequins pictured on a Macaws site I have looked at. The hybrids are not birds bred in the zoo, they belong to the company that does the bird and Sealion shows.
