Barnacle Geese 4th January 2013

Barnacle Geese

That's beautiful, reminiscent of a Peter Scott painting. Free-flying zoo flock, then?

Barnacles are probably my favourite of wild geese, so smart and 'active'. I seem to remember seing them in the zoo here and believe this is a free flying 'feral' flock. There is another of a couple of hundred strong at Seaview on the Isle of Wight, they derive from the nearby Bird Park and come and go as they please, but never seem to leave the area. Presumably there is no need for them too. Child Beale Trust at Pangbourne in Berkshire by the Thames also have(or had) a large number of free-flying Barnacles, and Egyptian Geese too.

There always seems to be a flock at Flamingo Land, although the numbers do seem to grow in winter. Maybe they disperse a bit in the warmer months. There has been a single specimen living around the harbour in Bridlington for a number of years, but presumably it is not a refugee from Kirby Misperton.
