Can you photo the layout of the outside area that they will use? I appreciate it may not be finished for them yet but some idea of the space available etc would be interesting.
I am not sure when I shall be visiting again so it could be finished when I go, but I shall photograph what I can. I suspect the outside area will be similar to that available to the Bison when they were in here before the Chimpanzees. The moat was filled in after the Camels were moved and the Bison had a large paddock including the former Peccary area. The moat was dug out again for the Chimpanzee outside exhibit, but has now been filled in once more. It could be that the outside area will expand on to the area known as Twentylands, but I doubt it. Then again...! I should have asked for details! Over winter I was told that the Indian Rhinos would be going where the original Meerkat exhibit and the Pelicans are now, but I thought that was a very small area for a house and paddock. There is much more room here, but if the original idea had been for a not too large paddock then maybe the one under construction will be similar in size to that available to the Bison as that was a reasonable size without being enormous - sorry, I rambled there and merely concluded the same as my earlier thought.
The last Elephant, the Asiatic Jangoli, left for Chester in January 1994. She had been on her own since the death of Susie in the autumn of 1992. The plan to bring two non-breeding females from Chester in return was abandoned because at the time Flamingo Land had only one keeper who was very experienced with Elephants.
My understanding is that the outside area for the rhinos will be quite large. I was there last weekend and the old chimp moat had been filled in and the whole area flattened out. There is also an extension going on to this building, roughly where the digger is in your picture.
