White Rhinoceroses, 30th September 2014

Do you know if the Rhino are allowed access to the grass all year round Andrew? I'm thinking of popping up to Flamingo land sometime over Christmas now they have resumed their winter openings. Wondered how good it is. Haven't been for about 6 or 7 years.:)

I wouldn't swear to it Rob, but I don't think they are - I think they are confined to the hard yard in winter. I have been trying to find a photograph of the exhibit taken in winter that shows the gate into the paddock, but no success so far. I find they are usually in their house anyway in winter, although they do pop outside occasionally (of course on days I am not there they may be disporting themselves outside from dawn to dusk).

As someone with such an emotional attachment to the Flamingo Park of the 1960s I am probably prejudiced in favour of the place, but I think it is largely good. I am even coming to terms with the loss of the Bird Walk (I wish it was still there though), and the "Treetop Walk" that usurped it. The new penguin exhibit is good and I like the pig yards in "Children's Planet". On the other hand I think "Reptile River" is not a patch on the old Reptile House. The wallaby walk-throiugh is nice and of course the lemur exhibit is a walk-through now too. I think the winter opening is excellent value at £10 for adults.
