Progress on Rhinoceros development, 18th February 2015

It was said they are going to have Blacks because they wouldn't need to build a pool. I see one already in this paddock but maybe that statement referred to not having to build indoor bathing facilities- for black Rhino that is.

So is it still to be Black rhino now?

Yes, I thought that about the pool! It was a member of the education staff who told me that; maybe she did mean an indoor one as what looked as though it could have been an excavation for a pool indoors is now just a floor.

And yes, it is Black Rhinos - presuming things do not change again (no suggestion they will though).

For blacks outdoor pool and mud wallow is essential. Indoors is a completely different story.

Since, you are so down on blacks any idea on current as planned completion date for the new rhino area (and hence the introduction of rhinos afters)?

To be exact on history: in 2013/14 the idea was to house 3.0 Indian rhino, including one proven bull. In April 2014 Flamingoland presented their plans to the Black Rhino Workshop. Read into that what you will.

Also, Flamingoland now carries the ISB for white rhinos (the keeper is of SBB stock and guild). Finally, they have been very cooperative on all matters rhino from Day One.

Mud wallows yes- they create one themselves if there isn't one. But I don't think any of the three current UK holders of Black Rhino have outdoor pools in all/any of their paddocks though? Flamingo might be the first.

Unless things have changed in Kent recently I'm sure there are four holders in the UK. :p Unless you're counting the Aspinall parks as one entity? In which case you're right.

I count the Aspinall parks as one entity as their management/ownership is the same, but yes, its really four locations...:)

I am afraid I do not know the date, but work was progressing at a pace.

Thank-you for the background information.
