I think I was lucky to see it as the keeper had just fed them . It only lurked in the entrance to the House , I did get a glimpse of its bald rat-like tail .
I have the privilege of holding one for a stage show when I worked at a zoo one summer. She was a big girl too, just judging from the head in this photo, bigger than this. Her and her sister were very sweet. Even if they liked to drool and fart.
You're still a lucky bastard, mrcriss I've never seen *any* opossum taxa, and considering how unpopular they are outside the private trade I wonder if I ever shall.
Yeah, if I'd have had the money to get these, then I would have. Unfortunately, the guy that owned them seemed convinced (quite wrongly) that they were V.Os and therefore was certain they were worth more than they really were.
I just don't know why some yank with a business sense doesn't send some over here, because they would sell like hot cakes!
I'd love to even see a Short-tailed Opossum, which are not all that uncommon in private hands I believe but there seems to be a reluctance in the zoological community to display even these.

Maybe 'cos they're so small? Only about the size of a large mouse, so not the most spectacular zoo exhibit. (although I'm lucky enough to have handled these too)
