certainly is Elephant Seals, Taronga used to have 3.
This is the Taronga I can remember of my childhood, i can remember the Brazillian Tapir exhibit where the gorilla forest now is, as well as the Wedgie aviary and old monkey pits on the site of Wollemi.
Looking at this map certainly reminds me of how much the place has changed
The aquarium was all concrete and originally made to look like a cave, but the walls and roof were later lined with sound-absorbing rubber because it echoed something fierce. There were sevral tanks displaying the fish of Sydney Harbour, several tropical tanks, some freshwater tanks with the obligatory lungfish, seahorses, a combined stonefish/lionfish tank, elephant-nosed mormyrid, archerfish and mudskippers.
The lower half - the shark pool - was closed in the mid 70's because it was not structurally sound. It was also made entirely of concrete.
The roof of the aquarium was a spectacular place to view the New Years Eve fireworks.
No. The area covered by the hippo icon became the Orangutan Enclosure (now housing the chimps).
The cages known as 'Running Bird Row' that housed Ostriches, Cassowaries and Rhea were replaced by the Giant Panda enclosures in 1988, and Toby the Brazilian Tapir went into one of those after the pandas left. The whole complex was knocked down and Gorilla Rainforest built on the site in the 1990's.
