A beautiful collection of photographs you have put on here along with the 2 in the Chester Gallery.
Hope to see more of your work shortly
Again a great collection of photographs

Hi Adrian, thanks for looking, glad you like them
Not been to Dudley zoo but I'll have to look out some of my West Midland Safari Park shots to share

My closest is Edinburgh but rarely go due to a dislike of the enclosures, I'm a season ticket holder at the Highland Wildlife Park which is a 4hr round trip but one I make every 3 or 4 weeks

Agree with all the above, terrific pics.
Could you elaborate on which enclosures at Edinburgh you dislike and why?, given a choice, i usually head to HWP too;)

Re Edinburgh, well it was the zoo I grew up with I suppose and I was unlucky enough to see it stagnate to an extent

I would hope that despite the obvious care and attention (given to Mercedes the polar bear) that even zoo staff would admit she has been ‘rescued’ for a 2nd time since her move north

Big cats are one of my passions and I long for Edinburgh to have the funds and space to do justice to this group but my memories are of several adjacent glass fronted boxes where cats seemed to be displayed rather than housed, see Chester’s Cheetah’s and Jaguars and HWP Tigers for just two examples of where they have it nearly right

Herd animals don’t excite my photography so despite the large areas devoted to these groups at Edinburgh it doesn’t do it for me

Of course Edinburgh is a much more commercial operation than HWP and needs to be, but with too much emphasis on the ARPU at Edinburgh it doesn’t make me resolve to return as other zoos do such as Marwell, Chester and West Midland

I understand that the last couple of years has seen Edinburgh address some of their issues and only last week I mentioned to the wife that we need to visit

From a selfish point of view a zoo or park also needs to be photographer friendly and many seems to fail to consider this, I truly wonder whether some zoos actually make photography difficult in an effort to ‘sell’ their own gift shop stock (not realising that a hobby photographer will not buy these shots anyway)

Clearly there is a balance between practicality, financial, animal welfare and safety to consider all of which must come before the photographer but certain things can be done at little or no additional cost that seem to have been left off the list of enclosure requirements

Now I’m droning on, perhaps I should move the last couple of paragraphs over to the forums to open this up to other (though doubtless it’ll have been discussed before) :)
