Brow Antlered Deer at Knowsley, 28/06/14

They do look like Barasingha to me. There seem to be two females with calves and one on the right without. That one could be a male after shedding his antlers (giving the 1.2 with recent breeding) but it looks like another female to me.

Do you know where they came from- presumably it was either WMSP or Port Lympne?

I checked with the staff and they confirmed that they still only have 3 Barasingha - 2 females and a male. They look right in the photo though so I see your point!

I've shown a copy of the photo to their keeper and the photo actually shows the Brow Antlered females 'Do' 'Rae' & 'Mei' and their calves.

The barasingha are indeed 2 females and a male and have yet to successfully rear a calf at KSP.

ah.. without a male's antlers, it was a bit confusing.

Good to know they are breeding Brow-antlered though. I am sure the Barasingha will follow. Where did they(Barasingha) come from, do you know?

Anyone know if they still have the Brow-antlered Deer? They aren't listed on their website but maybe they never have been...

Also doesn't Knowsley have Blackbuck?- again no listing. Asking these questions as I wasn't able to go in this area on my visit.

Yes to both :)

I saw them both yesterday actually - the Burmese Brow Antlered Deer number about 12 or so and the Blackbuck significantly more.

There are stock moves underway around the site at the moment so it's a bit pointless telling you where they were yesterday as they probably won't be in the same place next time you go? Ask me before you visit next and I'll confirm their location for you?

Thanks Karoocheetah. As Chester have got rid of their Blackbuck I'm also wondering if they have been added to Knowsley's original stock.

This was my first visit to Knowsley, its the other end of the country from me so unfortunately not expecting a return visit any time soon.
