Brow Antlered Deer at Knowsley, 28/06/14

Thanks Karoocheetah. As Chester have got rid of their Blackbuck I'm also wondering if they have been added to Knowsley's original stock.

This was my first visit to Knowsley, its the other end of the country from me so unfortunately not expecting a return visit any time soon.

Ah I see.

I'm doing a research project there so I spend a significant amount of time there I'm finding

Well if you want any photos posted just give me a shout - I always carry my camera with me so seem to have images of all of the animals there.

If you happen to talk to anyone 'in the know', I'd be interested to know which parks/zoos their stocks of the following species originated from;

Blackbuck
Nilgai
Barasingha
Axis Deer.

I know the Brow-antlered Deer and Lechwe would have come from Chester and maybe some other species did too?

I'll see what I can do :)

The BBAD & Lechwe originated from several European Collections - neither of them came from Chester Zoo :)
This is true for the species you name above too - there are a number of different originators to ensure species robustness with respect to the breeding guidelines as no doubt you are well aware.

I was pretty sure at least some of the Brow-antlered deer came from Chester- spare males as the original stock- then females from elsewhere later? Not correct?

The White Lechwe first seemed to appear in Chester's herd a long time ago now, but they have popped up more recently in other places like Paignton and Port Lympne also. Of course they could appear in other stocks too which received animals from Chester in the past, or alternatively in groups nothing to do with Chester's. Maybe I just presumed they had come from Chester.

Good to know they get animals from different sources to allow outcrossing though.

No apparently not - I asked :) all from other European collections.

The white gene is strong in KSP Lechwe too unfortunately (in my opinion only) - one of the current intact males obviously has a strong white gene!

I don't know where Chester's animals went to unfortunately, hopefully someone else can fill that blank in?
