Not a direct answer but they initially had one each born at Newquay and Marwell. One died and was replaced with another from one of the above ( can't remember/never knew which). I presume they still only have a pair and are 1.1.
Me too. A Wildebeest species- preferably this one but any would do, would IMO complete the modest 'revamp' of ungulate species that has occurred recently. I'm a realist so I don't expect them ever to exhibit the enormous range they once had, but to see Wildebeest there again would be nice.
Its a bit sad to see just pairs of these animals standing quietly in small paddocks or hardstands. Ideally a larger group galloping around a big area would be far more eyecatching- cue Whipsnade's large paddocks!
Absolutely, this species is a definate candidate for social enrichment ie; a herd species which naturally requires others to be content.
When they were at Marwell they were never content in their single pair situation, though they did improve a little (mentally) when they bred obviously.
