Captions welcome. ;) 9th September 2010.
Why all these macaw hybrids in zoos? I hate to see them.

Me too. I dont know if places like Longleat have bred them in the past(the one behind is a pure Blue/Yellow) or whether they're less expensive to purchase for shows etc by places that aren't fussy about such things. I agree they aren't nice to see.

The macaws there are all quite mature I think, certainly not breeding. Don't know whether they did before.

If they take part in Bird Shows etc they can't be breeding anyway as they are constantly being disturbed.

I think there are probably less hybrids (if any?) still being bred nowadays but being long-lived birds obviously means they will still be evident for many years. This one looks like a Blue and Gold x Military by its colouring.

No this is a Catalina Macaw Its a Blue and Gold Macaw x Scarlet Macaw.
If it was blue and gold x Millitary it would be called a milligold macaw and would be much more green.

I breed 12 different species of macaw. Non of which are Hybrid. Unfortunately in the old days Hybridising was popular due to the different colour variations you could get. It happens less these days.

they have never bred from the macaws at longleat as far as i know. they like to hav rescued birds or unwanted pets
