The oldest gorilla listed in Longevity of Mammals in Captivity: From the Living Collections of the World (Weigl; 2005) died in Philadelphia Zoo on 30th December 1984 after 53 years three months in captivity.
(I saw this animal, ”Massa”, in October 1984, just a couple of months before his death.)
In the years since Weigl’s book was published this record has been exceeded by a gorilla in Colombus Zoo and a gorilla in Dallas Zoo.
I saw Massa also, a year or so before his death. He was very shrivelled-looking and badly plucked of course. 'Nico' looks in far better condition for his age.
