The Four New Flamingos - 6 December 2015

6 December 2015 @ Lotherton Hall. This brings it up to seven flamingos at Lotherton. I'm not sure on the species, as the older three are Greaters (Phoenicopterus roseus), but these four definitely aren't greater. A discussion in the chatroom about a photo of one of new flamingos from Facebook led to us (well LaughingDove and TLD) thinking they're Chilean (Phoenicopterus chilensis), but now that I've seen them I think they look more like Carribeans (Phoenicopterus ruber) or hybrids, so I was hoping for a definite ID.

They look like Caribbeans to me. :)

I'm glad they're carribeans, as that what I said in the chatroom last night, but TLD and LaughingDove both said Chilean :p.

They're definitely not Chileans! If they were anything other than Caribbeans, they *could* be hybrids - but I don't see anything on them to suggest they're not pure.

Just thought they could be a little pale (and I've said similar in the past, and that turned out wrong, so I was being on the safe side ;)).

The body can be quite pale, but the neck and head are far darker than any other flamingo species.

In my (our) defence, the flamingos in the picture you posted in the chatroom yesterday looked much paler than the above ones. In the picture you have posted now, they definitely look like Caribbeans.
Here is the picture in question (just to show I'm not making up excuses :p)

Hmmm... that looks... well, still a Caribbean! :p

There's no pink on a Chilean's bill and they have very distinct pink 'knees'. ;)

Actually, the picture looks a bit stretched, which does give it the slightly more 'chunky' look of a Chilean, I'll give you that.

all the flamingo species have different "shapes" to the black part on the bill. It is generally pretty easy to tell them apart just from that.
