This is the first time I have seen four of these zebras at Marwell; usually there are three females

Until recently, there have been three Hartmann's mares, so when I noticed there is now four, I contacted Marwell to ask them about the newest arrival and this was their response:

"Libra arrived from Dvur Kralove Zoo on 26 November 2009. She was born on 16 June 2006."

Looking at the studbook, I can see that Libra is the half-sister of Hena, who was already at Marwell, and they were born only 2 months apart.

Nice shot- you have all four in the photo and nicely distributed- good composition!!
If they have now added a new mare, then surely they must be expecting a male soon as well?

For Marwell Fans, the righthand/nearside of this block is where the original Black Wildebeest were kept.

I found this studbook very interesting. Looking back to the 1960's, Whipsnade had a number of Hartmann's, mostly bred at Berlin though one I know, was born at ZSL/Whipsnade. Most of them didn't survive there very long, just a matter of weeks/months in some cases.

There was also some exchange between Marwell- Whipsnade too, until Whipsnade sent theirs to Marwell who for some time then became the only UK holder of this species.

may be they are doing gradual mixing by mixing the most dominant resident mare first before the others are added.
