Hi

Lovely photos.

Are the other 2 anoas at Marwell female? Please can you tell me a bit about them - names, ages

Thanks SWA , no the other two Anoas are a pair (male & female) though the male is castrated thats why we have imported a new male to pair up with the female eventually. The pair came from Whipsnade last year. The new male is from Tierpark Chemnitz in Germany. Our original Anoas died of old age , these three are the new batch. We have yet to breed anoas at Marwell successfully. Z.

Do you plan on keeping these species, although quite a few UK collections are phasing them out?

Yes hopefully we will be able to breed from the new male and current female once mixed but time will tell. Anoa have been kept for many years but as yet we have never had a successful breeding so long-term prospects are looking better now.Z.

This is Vladimir, who is in the old babirusa paddock whilst the two cows are in the Life in the Trees exhibit.

As Nanook said earlier in the thread, the two anoas who were in the 'Life in the Trees' exhibit were a pair from Whipsnade, but the male was castrated so Vlad was brought in from Germany as a breeding male. He has, in fact, been mixed with the female now in the enclosure seen in this photo, whilst the other male is alone in the 'Life in the Trees' exhibit.
