The ones I looked after always had a certain spot they would only go in.

I think they often go in the water too if there is a pool. Perhaps that is why(from memory) there is no outdoor pool here?- most Zoos with Tapirs give them water, from small ponds to some quite big lakes, to swim in as they are semi-aquatic. But I don't think Marwell have ever done so?

When they used to keep Brazilian Tapirs originally they did infact have an outside pool c1970s, before the Semi-Aquatic Mammal House was built.

The current semi-aquatic mammal house has an indoor pool aswell of course.

There are various species which prefer to defaecate in water, such as the Giant Anteater, Tapirs, Pygmy Hippos, Common Hippos, Capybara etc....

The building is fine- I just thought the pools were ridiculously small the first time I saw it. Presumably that was for ease of drainage/cleaning though. Whipsnade's also seem on the small side too, though not as tiny as at Marwell.

I will PM you Pertinax.
