It's interesting to me that there is such a skew towards males in the calves being produced by this group. There is plenty of research now pointing to the 'ability' of many species to determine the gender of their offspring based on availability/scarcity of nutrients, with more males being produced when food is abundant, first suggested by Trivers & Willard (although this has also since been challenged on occasion).

Yes, interesting thought. The group is quite a bit smaller now, several animals have been exported, some back to Spain I believe.
