It was a clever choice of location - Southampton, Portsmouth & Winchester all providing a large guaranteed visitor base, and as you say, no other major zoo for a long way in any direction.
I've always felt trees make a Zoo- the very open ones can be colder and more windswept, for visitors and probably for the animals too. Twycross has never invested in any real planting- they should have done so years ago.
