Huia

Now extinct, is was an endemic of New Zealand.

What is the location? The Natural History Museum, London?

yes, it's there.

Was this a honeycreeper? Very sad that it is no more.

UPDATE: Apparently it was a wattlebird, a lineage with which I am not familiar.

it does look honeycreeper-like in this photo because there is no sense of scale, but huia were large birds. The only surviving NZ wattlebirds are the saddlebacks (two subspecies or two full species, depending on which author you choose to follow) and the kokako (again two subspecies or two full species, although that of the South Island is now officially extinct).

Are there still occassionally supposed 'sightings' of Huia in the North Island? There were when I was there about 20 years ago.

I haven't heard of any for a fair while. There's circumstantial evidence the species may have survived for longer than the official extinction date (1907) but only a few decades if that. I can't give much credence to any sightings after the 1950s or '60s.

The Horniman museum also in london have a taxidermy pair of these too.
