Asiatic Black Bear in Newquay Zoo 1989. There were two left in 1989 , both quite old animals. The last Bear died in 1994 at Newquay. Back in 1969 they had 7 Asiatic Black Bears! Sulawesi Crested Macaques were installed in this enclosure when the bears went. Z.

Wow, 7?! Crazy:rolleyes:
Although this was a pit, it doesn't look too bad, what with the grass, plants etc. That however does not make up for it's tiny size.

i'm actually suprised i imagined the asiaitic bear pit at newquay to be a concrete hell hole!

It wasn't too bad though this photo somehow makes it look quite spacious which it isn't really. Its far more suitable for the macaques...

Absolutely pertinax, when is a bear pit a nice exhibit anyway! It does appear fairly "scenic" but it was taken at a very low, broad angle and during the summer months when all zoos look better! I know there was a pair here for many years but whether all their asiatic blacks were kept in the same enclosure or not I cannot say for sure. Z.
