Hoffmann's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) at Newquay Zoo - January 29

This individual is currently the last of his species surviving at Newquay, and therefore in the UK, and in my opinion looks markedly different from the much more commonplace Linne's Two-Toed Sloth.

Nice photo. This is the female if I remember right, the male is quite a bit darker in hair colour. Was there any sloth movement when you where in the tropical house at all?

Incorrect; this is the young male born some time ago - the female passed away on Boxing Day, I was informed, and I believe the breeding male died some time ago.

The sloth remained seated, but was awake and looking around a fair amount of the time.

Sometime ago? - within 12 months it must be as I visited 1st or 2nd Jan 2012 and there was a male and a female, a keeper said that they hoped they would breed soon. There was certainly two adults as I described about 12 months ago.... shame about the deaths.

EDIT - If had bothered reading your post that you put with your photo the info was there - typical me!

Pretty sure the old breeding male died longer ago than a year, and that this individual is more than a year old as I have not heard of any births lately - so my guess (emphasis on guess) is that the keeper was hoping for a mother/son breeding to keep the species extant at Newquay long enough for them to source new blood. Either that, or this individual was offshow when you visited.
