View of the Prairie Dog Enclosure

I can’t see any signs of the gentleman in the Aviator wearing any under where, but I would not go on line and say he probably isn’t. (unless I just had it in for him due to my private agenda) For anybody interested in the truth; The whole area was dug out to a depth of about 18” and welded wire mesh laid then the soil replaced, then the soil mounds placed on top of that, and yes it is very big.

Okay so it has wire under neath what happens when wire gets wet?To the best of my knowledge it rusts and starts to rot away,so its only a matter of time before they get out, unless you can tell me differently.

Hey bazzobuilder... I think that you have received a rather rough "welcome" here at the site. I hope this will not discourage you from contributing to it? The creationist approach at the zoo you work for will inevitably receive a lot of critisism at this site, but that is not my point.

I don´t think that we have any other member at the site working at a zoo in your special capacity. Therefore I believe that you could be a valuable contributor to the site, using your particular skills in the various discussions.

Right now, what is your take on forumster zoogiraffe´s technical objections to the construction of the praire dog exhibit?

Well Dan thanks for including “welcome” possibly got off on the wrong foot by trying to point out that there are a lot of comments about Noah’s Ark that just ant true.
There are enough things that could be improved in everybody’s work without making stuff up or just guessing. If anybody actually wants to help me by pointing out real shortcoming and giving useful advice I would be pleased to read their comments. If anybody has a problem with the religious side complain about that! Don’t just run down stuff by pretending to know that it isn’t this or hasn’t got that when they just have no idea. I actually thought that this site would be a helpful and possibly fun and I haven’t given up just yet.

To answer your question about zoogiraffe’s objections; Firstly please don’t call them technical he knows nothing about how it was built apart from what I just told him and he still is making up problems that he does not know if they exist or not. Unless I was working to a hidden agenda I would not suggest that something was not done unless I knew it to be the case I hope that there are members of this site that can extend me the same courtesy. Hopefully to close this matter I can tell you that I personally laid 4mm welded and galvanised 50mm square fencing wire about 400-500mm below present level over the whole site then placed the mound of soil on top of that. I would expect that to withstand rusting away for at least twenty years. I’m not going to talk about this any more if nobody has got my point yet they never will.

bazzobuilder, perhaps my use of the word "technical" in this context was a mistake. English is not my native tounge and sometimes I use the wrong words. I was asking for your professional opinion (I meant to referr to the "technical details" of the construction)and I think I just got it! Your description of your work on this enclosure certainly sounds convincing enough to me.

This is one of the biggest (non-free ranging) Prairie dog exhibits I have ever seen. It is certainly much closer to the prairie dogs natural habitat (wide open grassland) than some of the small concrete pits filled with builders sand that i have come across at other collections. I really don't think animal care is an issue at this zoo! I have yet to hear any evidence of deliberate mistreatment of any animals at the park. The issues raised on this board are sometimes very petty and unfound!

In regards to the hot wire surrounding the upper perimeter:
I have personally seen Prairie Dogs jump over a 1.5 metre wall, so I don't think installing a hot wire was such a bad idea. Just because you don't expect it to happen, doesn't mean that it won't!

Point taken but if you were to use that idea:

we are not expecting a jaguar to suddenly develop wings and fly out it's enclosure but we had better cage all jaguar enclosures just in case.

Silly isn't it! zoo enclosures cannot prepare for all possibilities, animals can do extraordinary feats in the right circumstance but very few enclosures allow for this.
