Demo(and Mali) must have lived in a good enclosure previously as they both have very good coats, not scuffed or bald from too much contact on concrete.

They actually looked better than this when they arrived and have acquired a few bare patches from being indoors a lot - hopefully a situation now in the past.

very nice looking orangutan. with a good pose. The colour of the fur I really like as well.

He has a very handsome face with a little pointed beard, and a lovely character. He's gradually demolishing parts of the enclosures and islands - very entertaining for visitors, but maybe not so amusing to the staff :D

Wait a few years for Demo's transformation. It still amazes me when males develop into mature adults how dramatically their appearance changes. Suddenly those big cheek pads and huge size make them look really sinister- though a goodtempered male is unlikely to change his temperament even though he now looks fearsome...

right there with you, orangutan males look extremely impressive in comparision to the female counterparts almost as much as lions are to each other.

He's still very boyish in his appearance and playful nature and female Mali dominates him. He sometimes walks upright and looks comical with his long legs and huge feet. There's no sign yet of cheek pads or bulking up but as he'll only be 11 in June, there's still some time to go.
I can remember Nakal as an inquisitive boy when he first came to Paignton but later, when he was fully adult and kept separate, you could only see him at a distance on his island, with his back to the crowds. Apparently he had a gentle nature (and no doubt still has).

Interesting that Demo walks upright, probably because he is slim. This trait is far more common in Sumatran males, because they are generally of lighter build but it may reflect a slight difference in their skeletal structure too. I have seen photos of Bornean males doing it but its more unusual.

I think I told you about Nakal's grandfather Charlie(Bulu's father) at london. One or two trusted keepers could still go in with him when he was a fully adult, padded male. But some males(and even females) can be lethal...:(
